Umbrella: Sustainable hospital offers instant medical facilities

umbrella 4
An entry in the Design for Children competition, the “Umbrella” by Visiondivision Architects is a children’s hospital project for Rwanda that will allow an instant and cost-effective medical facility in rural Africa. Featuring an upside down umbrella designed to collect water from natural resources, dew or rain, the composition is made out of light felt and steel. The structure locates a massive water container in the middle that not just accumulates fresh water for regular use, but at the same time doubles a central base for the entire arrangement. Generating energy from solar panels, the structure offers great flexibility, as it can easily be broadened by adding an outer layer of felt and moving the pillars outwards from the center point, to accommodate more people.
