Inspired by the fact that many shoppers are overwhelmed in a hardware store environment and lack the necessary information to make informed shopping decisions, the “Symbol” by Michael Grigoriev is an eco-assist scanner concept for a personal shopping assistant that empowers the user to make educated and environmentally responsible purchasing decisions in a hardware store. By using a product’s Life Cycle Assessment to classify its environmental impact, the scanner allows shoppers to instantly compare related products and make educated choices.
The scanner also provides additional information on the product, such as price, a brief description and applications of use. The main body of the scanner consists of an OLED display that displays the necessary information and glows on a gradient from red to green, which represents the product’s environmental impact. The rest of the scanner is made of a rugged organic plastic to survive the hardware store environment.
