Sun House: Pushing the envelope on self-sufficiency

In this energy-poor world, the sun is often touted as a panacea; and rightly so! Talk about solar power and its optimum utilization in buildings and a host of designs by contemporary architects immediately pop up to mind. While some of these are really extraordinary, there’s no dearth of awful designs either. Fear not though, since this post is about the former category. Luca Donner – an Italian designer – has put on display a marvelous concept building, tagged the Sun House. The Sun House is a self-sufficient building in every sense of the term. Utilizing multitudes of integrated photovoltaic panels, the Sun House produces enough energy to meet virtually all its needs. In addition, it harvests rain water wonderfully well. The façade of the structure looks odd but that is only in order to maximize the availability of natural sunlight for heat and illumination. The Sun House is also a shining (no pun intended) example of modern trend for modular construction. Its various parts are fitted on top of each other and assembled around a central core that bears most of the weight. Check out more images of the Sun House after a jump and witness that the house is just as enchanting from the inside.
