Increasing sea levels due to climate change or global warming is one of the major concerns for the coastal nations all over the world. Battling the threat from rising sea levels, the Maldives government in collaboration with Dutch Docklands/Dutch Watervalley has planned to develop several floating facilities for the islands, which will provide luxury retreats to the inhabitants, as they also integrate a convention center and golf courses. The brainchild of architect Koen Olthuis of Waterstudio.NL, the new floating islands comprise star-shaped small cities with hidden spaces, including interior pools and beaches underneath the green roofs. Other than providing shelter to the coastal people, the water developments will make use of sustainable methods and procedures to minimize the impact on marine life and coastal morphology.
