jkmm architects 03

Winning entry at the Shanghai World Expo 2010, the “Kirnu” (meaning giant’s kettle) by JKMM Architects is an innovative pavilion that telling the stories of Finland and its people portrays Finland in a microcosm. Resembling a floating island in a lake or sea, with surface covered by shingles similar to those of fish scales, the Kirnu touts wooden floor with the smell of tar and accommodates an elevated exhibition hall, shops and restaurants. Featuring the faced made of recycled materials, including a mixture of paper and plastic, the pavilion is not only water resistant but also reduces energy consumption by virtue of a favorable alignment with the sun to reduce the heat. Based on the natural elements of water and sky, the architecture makes use of latest construction techniques to make life better and health in the days to come.
