Single hand cellphone use is a design feature that not many big brands have incorporated in their most popular designs yet. But with cellphones and on-the-go business solutions becoming more mainstream than ever, concepts like the Orbital Phone, and the newer Strata + Saturn give us a sneak peek of what the future of cellphone usage could look like. Part of the Project Rubik, the design explores Kinetic UI technologies in context with fresher physical input methods. The research that went in the creation of the concept focuses on developing technologies that take cellphones beyond multi-touch.

The concept phone by designer Parker Kuncl imitates the concentric stratified rings of Saturn and uses it as a design feature that forms the touch-sensitive depression on the back of the device. The touchpad allows users to control the on-screen activity by simply circling a specific ring with their fingers. The new interface allows users to operate a touch phone without having to block the view on screen while operating it. Not only does it allow users to experience new interactions that are spread across the OS instead of being restricted to just one app, the UI also allows user to explore features like navigation, gaming and e-reading without having to operate the phone with both hands.
The patent-pending design is optimized for portrait or landscape orientations and the phone supports both one handed as well as two handed use which would allow people with injuries or disability to experience all the same features on their phones as the others.
