Lilypad: A green utopia for the year 2100

Ever since the biblical times, man’s quest for heaven has resulted in him imagining utopias with no room for evil or follies, where man can peacefully coexist with nature. But with global warming threatening many major sea-side mega cities of the world, the need for an off-shore safe haven becomes all but essential. This is where Vincent Callebaut’s Lilypad comes into the pictures. Proposed as a “Floating Ecopolis for Climate Refugees”, the ecotectural futuristic abode can house about 50,000 inhabitants. The stunning retreat seeks a place for itself in the year 2100 when half the world’s existing shorelines have disappeared due to raising sea level. With stealth Mercedes branding in its windows, biotic walls and roofs, a roof covered with a grassland soaking up solar energy and the submerged bottom half serving as a natural sea bed for planktons and oceanic plants, the ambitions Ecopolis features some pretty kickass bio-tech functions which will help the floating community self-sustain and survive in the increasingly challenging environs of the future earth.
