'J' for Japan: Never ending holiday cheer at Shell House

By Naresh KumarChauhan   /Dec 5 2008

Looking to make your vacation memorable this holiday season? The ‘Shell House,’ located in the green woods of Karuizawa, in the Nagano region of Japan, may turn out to be the perfect destination. Designed by architect Kotaro Ide, the Shell house resembles the English alphabet "J" and floats 1400 mm above the ground. The terraces, together with the central courtyard of the main living areas, across the home are carved out of the Ulin wood. The aesthetic structure also comes fully loaded with all modern amenities.

Usability:

It features two elliptical shell forms finished with reinforced concrete which makes the vacation house accessible throughout the year, be it the humid summers or the cold winters. The eco-structure makes a perfect balance between the man-made and the natural, maintaining the traditional landscape of the nation.
