Eggshell Bathtub by Toby Nowland is a real stress buster

The student winner of the Reece BIA 2011, the Eggshell Bathtub concept by designer Toby Nowland looks to revolutionize the way we look at traditional bathtubs and interact with them during the course of our routine lives.

"Curled up in a fetal position in the bathtub" is how people who are feeling emotionally insecure are described as in popular culture. The phenomenon is explained as being an instinctive defense mechanism in which someone who has suffered extreme psychological or physical trauma or is suffering from heightened levels of stress, will assume the fetal position to prevent themselves from being exposed to more trauma. Evolutionarily speaking, when the brain is no longer capable of coping with the stresses of the environment surrounding the person (physically or psychologically), the body instinctively assumes this position.

Since most of us like to think of a long bath at the end of a hard day as the perfect stress buster, it makes a lot of sense to have a bathtub designed in a way that provides users with a cocooning structure that would allow them to feel secure and help them relax better.

The Eggshell Bath provides just such a refuge for people who may or may not be prone to suffering from heightened levels of stress and looks to provide something of a sanctuary for all kinds of people. Looking to relax the body as well as the mind and soul, the bath is formed in the shape of an asymmetric structure that is sliced strategically to allow the bather to have a full view of the outside while sheltering them in a comforting way.

The opening allows the bather to slide in easily into the bathtub. Ambient lighting built into the base allows the bathtub to be filled with attractive yet soothing lights and shadows that project on the inner walls of the bathtub adding a touch of glamour to the regular bathing experience. The smooth inner walls add the comforting feeling of enclosure while the pristine white surfaces allow users to unwind and relax in this uniquely soothing bathtub.
