BMW's GINA- A car made of fabric

When you finally started to think cars couldn’t get more innovative, BMW shocks us with its new concept car ‘GINA Light Visionary Model’ with its body being made of not metal but fabric, a seamless, plastic coated Lycra material. The fabric stretches over a metal frame allowing the car to shape shift without tearing or damaging the fabric. The fabric is water resistant and durable. The car, which is based on a 4.4-liter Z8 with a six-speed automatic transmission (which was discontinued) now has a 5.0 liter V8. The body comprises of a hood, sides and a rear.

An innovative idea need not be practical and GINA still has to prove to the consumers that it won’t reduce the driver to a mangled body after a crash. What seems to attract criticism to this concept is that a fabric can be easily violated by miscreants and a pair of scissors is enough to do that. The car could in fact be further conceptualized to be eco-friendly, as it does not use a metal body and save precious metal resources, which are being depleted.
