Scheduled to complete in 2012, the Eco-Park in the Governor’s Island is gonna be one of the greenest locations in New York City. The renovation project is a combined venture of the West 8, Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Rogers Marvel Architects and will include numerous eco-friendly features, converting the decaying Coast Guard constructions into an eye-catching eco-park. The hybrid project is stretched over an enormous 172-acre plot, starting from the man-made topography of lower Manhattan to the artificial landscape at the southern tip of the island. The exotic landscape, which will include graceful paths, watercourses, restaurants and aquaria, will be finished with the recycled material of the present constructions of the Governors Island. Visitors will have to travel the winding paths of the park on complimentary wooden bicycles that will help in maintaining carbon free surroundings. The eco-park will not just help in sustaining the environment, but it will also spread recreational, cultural and educational values.
