The good folks of the Makoko community in Lagos, Nigeria know that floods are a huge part of their lives. People here have had more rainy days than sunny ones and have adapted to their watery surrounding very well. They have built homes on stilts and commute via canoes. Born in Nigeria, architect Kunle Adeyemi knows the trials and tribulations that this community is prone to, has now come with a brand new idea that would allow children in the region to attend school even during massive flood season. In 2009, Adeyemi visited the region and saw that the children in the 250,000 community only had a single primary school for the entire community.

To ensure that children from the community are able to attend school no matter how bad the flooding is, Adeyemi has created the flooding schools project that would essential comprise of a three storey structure sitting atop the water using plastic drums. These floating schools would be made to functional pretty much like regular school building and would come fitted with mechanisms for waste disposal, fresh water and even sanitation facilities. Each floating school would be designed to house 100 students plus faculty. Locally-sourced wood would be used to construct the frame of the building while 256 plastic drums would allow the structure to stay afloat.

Why do we garden? This question drives the research of many researchers each year and they work hard to develop trends that could benefit the manufacturers working in the garden industry. Some of the gardening trends pop up due to growing choices for gardeners. New and wonderful plants keep showing up each year which encourages the gardeners to keep trying something new and interesting in their garden area. What are the trends that will prevail in the coming year 2013? The answer to this question is what we will discuss further.

Fragrant flowers: a garden must have flowers and if the flowers smell good then it becomes even more beautiful. It happens to be a natural reaction to smell the flower but the problem is that not every flower has a good scent. The year 2013 will come with a trend that will require gardens to have a lot of fragrant flowers.

Variegated beauties: a beautiful garden is desired by every gardener and that is why they keep updated about the latest design trends. Pretty flowers come and go however variegated beauties tend to stay. Hence they are the latest choice for the gardeners as they are beautiful and stay as they are for the whole season.

Plant bulbs: if the gardeners wish to add the beautiful look of first spring to their garden in different colors then they should go for planting bulbs. A beautiful garden only calls for a trowel and of course some bulbs.

Mixed bouquets: bouquets of only flowers are the thing of the past as the latest trends inspire people to take a different road. Now when you make a bouquet try using some fresh vegetables like radishes or flowering kale in it. This will give you a pretty and a unique bouquet.

Mini versions of homesteads: homesteading is also becoming the latest trend as people are trying to grow more in less space and with use of less water.

Old fashioned flowers: old is gold- this saying can be used in many different situations and this one happens to be one of them. Old fashioned flowers are making a huge comeback this year and gardeners will love planting them in their gardens. Plants such as lavender, Russian sage and moonflower will be among the favorites of the people in 2013.

Sharing gardens: people will try and make their garden a friendlier place for the natural beings such as butterflies, bees and birds. What could be better than having a beautiful garden that could also serve as a home to natural critters?

Permeable pavers: pavers happen to be a vital part of a garden and every gardener wants to have the best for his garden. Permeable pavers are actually a wonderful choice for a garden as they help the storm water to filter and they also look very good.

The energy potential of the Sun is known to all and it is also a…

The energy potential of the Sun is known to all and it is also a well known factor that this energy can be exploit to certain limitations owing to the expenses require to be incurred. Taking electricity through silicon solar cells is really very expensive and one could get the estimate by knowing that one require to spend 10 times more than the money spent on coal energy. In the developing countries the idea still seems to be a matter of dreams. However, the richest of nations are still spending on it.

At present, the polymer solar cells are used to harness electricity from solar energy, which use the organic materials for absorbing light and then transform it into light. However, according to the scientists these current properties to generate electricity are not very efficient and up to the mark.

What new research says:-In a new research by scientists at Northwestern University, researchers have attempted efforts to increase the efficiency of this polymer layer, which is based on mathematical search algorithm based on evolution. In this experiment scientists have tried to design the pattern of this layer in a geometrical way, in order to increase the time for which light remains to be within the cell.

This pattern holds the light for optimum amount of time in the organic solar cells which therefore, has shown three fold better results in the matter of trapping light in comparison to the conventional method of organic solar cells. The new pattern of trapping light in thin-cell organic solar cells would be soon fabricated at Argonne National Laboratory.

In this algorithm based method, light is made to enter a geometrically patterned scattering layer , which is 100 nanometer thick. This dielectric layer is designed in order to increase the light transmitted into the cell, after this front layer, light enters the active layer which converts it into electricity.

This new discovery has challenged to the yablonovitch limit, which is a thermodynamic limit to describe the duration for which a photon can be held in a semiconductor. This pattern was developed in the year 1980 and since then has been followed worldwide for converting solar engery intoelectricity.

According to Cheng Sun, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University, the researchers wanted to establish the geometrical pattern in order to get the maximum holding time for light and thus, took the guidance from laws of natural selection. Cheng Sun has also co-authored this research paper.

This research paper under the name of “Highly Efficient Light- Trapping Structure Design Inspired by Natural Evolution” was published on January 3 in the Journal called Scientific Reports, which is a publication of Nature.
According to Wei Chen, Wilson-Cook Professor in Engineering Design and Mechanical Engineering Professor at McCormick, the research included evolutionary principals of crossover and genetic mutation. She also said that this process works on the biologically process of evolution, which is survival of the fittest and required an appropriate approach because of the non-linear and irregular behaviour of the systems.

This new pattern of light scattering layer could prove to be a less expensive method of harnessing electricity from solar energy. Researchers have not increased the thickness of the polymer layer, rather looked for other possibilities which involved mathematical search algorithm based on natural evolution procedures. Initially the scientists had made efforts with several other design patterns of the layers, which could enhance the light trapping performances and finally after over 20 generations experiments they reached this form of evolutionary process.

Eco-Modular Classroom, A Green Approach For Young Minds Whether you need an art studio, office…

Eco-Modular Classroom, A Green Approach For Young Minds

Whether you need an art studio, office space, music room, science block or coaching centre, it is always worthy to choose a place where learning is green and comes naturally. For a space where young minds are developed, it is imperative to have a green environment for more inspiration and motivation. Eco-friendly classroom has evolved as a great and innovative solution to encourage environmental citizenship, educational play, outdoor learning and help students re-connect with nature. Without any doubt, poorly maintained and old buildings have detrimental impact on both teaching and learning.

Eco-friendly materials and modern designs used for construction makes green classrooms a relaxing space to lean while maintaining strong ecological approach. Good thing is that eco-modular classes are designed to nurture your individual needs and reduce impact on environment. Right now, 7.5 million children study in more than 300,000 classrooms in United States. So far, “temporary” rooms serve the needs for 5-year tenure indicating that these structures are designed for quick support for staffing overflow. This is probably a challenge but, an architect Allen Post at “Perkins and Will” designing firms told Co. Design that Temporary classroom is loud and inhospitable for learning.

Allen Post’s Eco-Modular Classroom

Inhospitable dungeons designed the plan for “Sprout Space”, that is eco-modular classrooms of firm and winner of 2009 Open-Architecture Challenge. Allen Post was pleased by modular construction when studying 2.5 million houses built under housing mandate of Nelson Mandela in South Africa. This shifted Allen’s approach for temporary classrooms in support of healthier and strong learning environment. Perkins+Will examine all essential materials used for eliminating off gassing in learning space. Natural ventilation let fresh air to enter into the room for improving quality of indoor air.

Thoughtful designs often affect the curriculum of teachers and have a great impact on learning. Moreover, butterfly-shaped roof opens up doors for more sunlight to sparkle up indoors. This design also diverts the way of rainwater towards class-side funnels through funnels. Rooftop solar sheets link to real-time website often accessed by students to monitor the use of power in entire building.

About Eco-Modular Classrooms

An architect-designed eco-modular classroom space is a preeminent choice to serve your educational needs and propose an energy-efficient building. Eco-classrooms are cost-effective and sustainable solutions that are build on government’s intention to achieve sustainable learning space. With low emission and running cost, eco-modular classrooms have evolved as a turnkey solution to complement every need. Introduced in 1960, quick-fix solution has great drawbacks as classroom space and ever deteriorating. In an era when children are taught on interactive plain boards with the use of handheld computers, an out-dated and prefabricated surrounding is unsuitable.

Eco-friendly environment not only maintain healthy environment but also ensures child-friendliness and low maintenance. By providing a realistic approach, eco-modular classroom is an eco living space for students. Green classrooms are constructed using 99.9% recyclable and reusable materials to ensure minimum impact on environment. This space builds a relationship between teaching and learning. With an estimated lifespan of more than 40 years, eco-modular classroom propose both a permanent and semi-permanent solution for student’s needs.

It is common knowledge that everybody is going Green in the present times. Of course, there are many who still do not give a toss, but they are not worth bothering about. Still staying on the optimistic side, everybody is trying in their own, unique, small or large way in which to contribute toward a better environment and less wastage.

However, sometimes you have to think beyond just recycling. Sometimes replacing certain things with something more adaptable to Mother Nature is the solution. Not that many realize this, but the answer always lies in front of our eyes. Take festivals, for example. Believe it or not, together with all kinds of festivals that takes place over a period of one year, the consumption of light alone is enough to provide electricity to a small Third World country!

Not anymore, however. Rising Sun Energy Center in San Rafael has dished out the perfect solution.

What We Use and What We should Use

The kind of lights that we have so far used in our households, fairy lights or strands of colorful or white lights, are usually incandescent, consume plenty of power and do not last long. However, the new kind of LED fairy lights supplied by the nonprofit organization, Rising Sun Energy, is not just a brilliant alternative, but inexpensive and consumes much less power.

For people who love fancy things, you can get plenty of strands of such LED lights which glow much stronger while helping you with a pocket friendly electricity bill. In addition, there is no point of uselessly dumping such LED lights once they have run their course. Such lights can be recycled in some manner or the other. In fact, there are plenty of joints which not only recycle but create new things from such lights.

Stylish Introduction and Consumer Views

Though, it may seem like a small step, but Rising Sun Energy Center could not have chosen a better time or place for launching these lights. San Rafael, which is pretty much gearing up for Christmas, down to every small detail, have more than welcomed such an option.

Of course, it is not without some amount of tactics that Rising Sun Energy has accomplished such a task. Plenty of people were found to flock the Northgate Mall on a blistery December Saturday morning to exchange their old lights for the better LED ones.

The organization had introduced this exchange offer, whereby people could bring in their old strands of lights for new LED ones, absolutely free of cost! Even apart from the free offer, the launch was very well received by the folks of San Rafael. On an average, each family swapped their incandescent strands of lights for about 7 strands of the LED ones. Not that there was any limit attached to the exchange. Plenty of people did take more. The choice was of course between colored ones and white or yellowish ones.

This innovative swapping option was of course given till whatever time the stocks lasted. Judging by the popularity of the swap encounters, stocks did not last for too long! People in doubt could pretty much see the moderators of the Rising Sun Energy Center’s happily taking the numerous strands of incandescent lights and dumping them in green eco-friendly trash and recycling bags.

Surely, it was a very busy Saturday morning and for many who turned up a bit late, had to go back home disappointed. Not that they had to worry much, since the Rising Sun Energy Center held the swap event again, this time in the Community Center, again on a Saturday morning.

That event too had a good turnout with plenty of people more than happy to swap!

Curtains are mainly used for the purpose of preventing heat and sunlight from entering the rooms. Draping curtains over the doors and windows secure you. But instead of conventional curtain designs, you can opt for innovative styles that help save energy in many ways. Some curtains come embedded with solar cells to generate energy in sunlight and use it at night for lighting. Other designs help preserve energy.

[box_dark]Energy Efficient Curtain Designs[/box_dark]

The Energy Curtain, conceptualized by the industrial designer team of Johan Redström, Margot Jacobs, Linda Worbin, Ramia Mazé and Carolin Müller, serves separate purpose other than stopping the entry of heat and daylight into your rooms. The curtain is designed to harvest power from heat and sunlight during the day and at night, the light-emitting elements in the inner portion of the curtain will allow it to glow using the stored power.
