Turkish born Hakan Saracoglu has a vast experience and knowledge of 15 years with Porsche and has been closely associated with the concept as well as designing of many of the most stylish cars like Boxster, 918 Spyder and the GT2 and GT2 RS versions of the Cayman from the house of the international automobile mogul Porsche. Armed with a Bachelor of Science in Transportation Design degree from the Art Center in California, the 47 year old former Porsche designer had a promising stint with Ford Europe and was a part of the designing team of Ford Mondeo and Ford Focus before moving onto Porsche. Chery Automobile is looking to tap the huge knowledge and resource from Hakan Saracoglu and use it to design and manufacture more stylish as well as efficient cars. Chery is not a very well known name worldwide but with this appointment, they plan to widen their market and try to make their own place in the international arena too.

Hakan Saracoglu will be based out of Shanghai in China and will head a team of 30 promising designers who will conceptualize and design cars under the direct supervision of the former Porsche designer. They would be concentrating on getting the best designs in terms of style as well as sophistication bundled with efficiency.  According to sources Hakan Saracoglu is being paid a huge pay packet that could be 3x more than what most automobile companies pay in Europe or in the US. Chery is not the first Asian company to lure and hire international designers with fat pay packages, there have been many other Asian companies like  Beijing Automotive and Great Wall Motor Co. that have also brought in designers from international design houses to improve their car styling and also make them more international.

Company prospects

Chery is most popular for its QQ car which is a mini car that is known to be very economical, but the company is now looking to expand its horizon to other car segments too. With the induction of Hakan Saracoglu the company would like to start increasing its market value in SUVs and Sedans too. The company is looking to enhance its image and market value and provide good competition to international car manufacturers like Volkswagen and General Motors that have a good foothold in the Asian market.  Although this change will not happen overnight the company believes that its process of redefining its image has begun and they will leave no stone unturned to meet their goal. With a good designing team and a strong willingness to beat competition and shine the state owned Chery Automobile Co. is all set to face and conquer new challenges that it may face in this process.

The Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce(VACC) Automotive Design Awards are one of the most prestigious awards that recognize and awards upcoming student talent in the designing field of automotives in the state of Victoria, Australia. VACC chose him to be a judge as they found him to the perfect person who would understand the enthusiasm and mindsets of the young entrants and will help them by providing feedback and insight into their work.

The former Corporate Manager of the Styling and Design Team in Toyota  Paul Beranger will also be a part of the judging committee not only as an independent judge but also as the chairman of the judging committee. Nicolas Hogios replaced Paul Beranger in Toyota in 2002 and has been the new face of Toyota’s designing team ever since. With such stalwarts in the judging panel the benchmark is set very high and the winners have to be exceptional.

Highlights of the Award Function

The VACC Automotive Design Awards will be held at the Federation Square in Melbourne on 20th June 2013. The awards will be presented by Peter Hall who is the Minister for Higher Education and Skills. The students not only get awards but also get a cash prize for themselves and the school, college or university that they represent. The best designs from the entries for the Awards will be later displayed at the Australian International Motor Show to be held at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre this year from June 28th to July 7th. Scully completed his studies at the Roger Williams University after which he joined the Johnson engineering Motorsports for his apprenticeship which is where his career started from. He says that before designing the perfect bobsled a person needs to have the proper experience with it. Michael Scully has been a pro at designing and building cars for many years and people have a lot of expectations from this project that he is doing. The first Carrozzeria Touring concept was Superleggera which was revealed in 2008. Superleggera came out as Maserati A8 GCS and exposed at the prominent Concorso d’ Eleganza Villa d’Este. A8 GCS was inspired of 1954 released Pininfarina’s Maserati A6 GCS. It follows the concepts of Maserati GranSport that leads the GranTurismo which showed the completed concept forms the upcoming year. The Superleggera has a 4.2 liter V8 along with 385 horse power on the tap, although the whole concept was based on its design which would make it a good successor of the GranTurismo, no matter if it is old enough to compete.

On the other hand, Gumpert is the manufacturer of the best Supercars running. However, Apollo lacks behind in the field of style. Therefore, Gumpert catch a deal with Touring to make it a fresh design. Touring presented it in the form of Tornant with its debut last year at a show in Geneva. It showcased its Audi based 4.2 liter of twin turbo V8 engine along with 700 hp. In spite of this, the development of the Gumpert was halted and it fell on the hard times. At present when it is back and successfully running, we wish to see it again with all the supercars hitting the road in the forthcoming years.

In the Geneva show where Gumpert revealed its Tornante designed by Touring, Carrozzeria itself unveiled its other model in the form of Alfa Romeo Disco Volante. Just like Tornante, Disco Volante was a little less than the real model. This year we will see the completed version of the Disco which is packed with a 4.7 liter of V8 from Alfa 8C Competizione. Like A8 GCS, the Alfa Romeo is also inspired of the 50s classics; Alfa Romeo Disco Volante was originally designed in 1952 by Carrozzeria in its glory days.

A few years back before Ferrari could release its Mercedes or FF with enlarged roof CLS, Carrozzeria Touring in Geneva came up with a modified Bentley Continental generally identified as a Flying Star. It has a 3 door shooting brake which was in fact made on the concept of the continental GTC which is packed with the same sheet metal and 6.0 liter twin turbo W12 engine. It took 4000 man hours for the conversion process. Carrozzeria Touring was all set to accept up to 19 orders of Flying star for the individual customers. But is still a question, whether Touring succeeded in making this much number of Bentley Continental or not.

However, the Flying Star was not the only one which was successfully converted by the Touring and A8 GCS was also not the only one which was toyed with. At the same time, Touring was transforming Quattroporte into a Bellagio Fastback. It was therefore, introduced at the Villa d’Este concourse on Lake Como in Italy. Its rival Zagato debuted its Bentley Continental GTZ at the same place. The conversion to Bellagio Fastback was artfully crafted if compared to CinquePorte which was designed by StudioM. In spite of such a tremendous effort by Touring, we are not sure if any of these were ever booked by the customers.

The owners of Lamborghini believe in producing the cars that people can actually buy and are not just the concept cars. Usually the Lamborghini cars a rare sight, but some of these Lamborghini cars like the Sesto Elemento and Aventador J are even rarer than others, but sooner or later the stylish racing cars that the Lamborghini unveils eventually make production. But the five cars mentioned below, these models never ruled the roads but they were merely displayed in the showrooms of Lamborghini as they were never put into production due to several reasons.

MIURA

This is one of the most exciting projects, but the confusion about the question that arises here is that, did the Lamborghini made the Miura or not. It’s not the original supercar, the company referred to the retro concept that Sant’Agata debuted in 2006. The Miura concept that was based on the Murcielago was an unusual retro design for a company that was at the zenith of glory but was never intended for production.

ZAGATO

Well, this supercar was not at all designed by Lamborghini; it was actually designed by an independent design studio named Zagato. The Lambo’sZagato Raptor enjoyed a full fledged support from the factory with the inputs from Swiss sled racer Alain Wicki. This model is perfectly designed with the signature elements from the Zagato and the Lamborghini plus the former’s double-bubble roof. TheZagato Raptor, powered by the Diablo’s 492-horsepower 5.7-liter V12, the debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in 1996 and surprisingly the model was sold to a private collector at the same venue.

CALA

The next supercar concept was designed at the 1995 Geneva Motor Show by the GiorgettoGiugiaro’sItalDesign. Calpa is considered as the new standby for Jalpa, features a 4.0-liter V10 right in the middle, driving at an incredible power of 400 horsepower to the rear wheels through a six-speed. This car was absolutely a reality and the three models were fully ready but unfortunately it never saw any more production due to the changes made in the ownership of Lamborghini. The Cala is merely a base of Gallardo nothing more than that as the latter is very different in the design.

ESTOQUE

Lamborghini surprised the crowd at the Paris Motor Show of the year 2008, when it showcased its whole new estoque concept, this time it was completely different from the early mid engine supercars that Lamborghini produced exclusively for the past few decades. This model was very different as it featured four doors instead of the two and the engine was placed up in the front instead of the engine behind the cabin. Estoque concept was expected to attract the crowd and it was expected to be produced in mass numbers, but unfortunately after the five years, it does not seem to be moving as per the plan.

URUS

Not just the Estoque, the Urus was not less than it in any respect. This time the Lamborghini launched an SUV and it was debuted in the Beijing auto show last April. Well, it was not the only departure for this company, as in 80’s this company built the LM002 and before that it made the tractors. This concept appealed the public quite well as it seemed to be a stronger concept. While the Estoque model is more popular and no more mass produces, the Urus is in a much better condition than that as, the parent company of this SUV, the Volksvogen is trying its best to increase the production of this supercar.

The ‘Signature Delivery Vehicle’ Story

Domino’s recently tied up with “Local Motors” to organize a contest. The contest gave the opportunity to people from around the world to give designs for the “Ultimate Delivery Vehicle”. In the process the participants had the opportunity to win cash prizes. The competition closed just a few days back and Local Motors in collaboration with Domino’s announced the winner. The winning design has been named as ‘Domino’s Pack’ and the designer is Anej Kostrevc of Slovenia. The delivery vehicle designed is almost nine feet long, slightly less than five feet wide and approximately six feet tall. The wonder delivery vehicle ‘Domino’s Pack’ is designed to maximize interior space for pizzas and beverages.

The vehicle also has a cool rear drawer and some regular drawers and trays. The cool drawer has the capacity to store and chill about nine, 2 liter bottles. The other drawers and trays are for storing the pizzas, garlic breads and other edible stuff like pasta, wraps etc. The ‘Domino’s Pack’ has automatic sliding doors similar to 2013 Ford Escape foot activated lift-gate system. The concept has won the designer $10,000.

The second and the third winners won $5,000 and $1,500. The next ten top entries won five hundred dollars each. The pizza giant has planned in total five phases of the competition. There are four more phases yet to happen. Domino’s plans to distribute approximately $50,000 as prize money across all the five phases. The vehicle details like packaging, interior, surfacing and rendering will be finalized basis voting and validation on similar lines. The design submission contest will be completed in phases by February 2013.
