Art gallery fashioned from old shipping containers

Shipping containers have been used to create prefabricated homes for quite a while now, though we haven’t seen them being put to such creative uses as this temporary art gallery. Dubbed GAD, this multilevel public facility is created by MMW architects, an Oslo based studio that used a bunch of shipping containers to create a fully functional art gallery located in Tjuvholmen, Norway. Being a prefab structure, the gallery is easy to assemble and dissemble and thus can be moved to another location if required. Off the base, the structure features a substantial cantilever and the shipping containers are stacked to give the gallery a more defined yet minimalist feel.

The main interaction area of the gallery is housed at the ground floor which is made from combining five units that create a big open area. On the second floor lies the central courtyard fashioned in a u-shaped form made from three containers. The third level of the gallery has a square layout with a roof terrace gallery as well as an elevated exhibition space.

Since the containers were structurally sound, an outdoor exhibition space was created out of the exposed roof surfaces around the structure. The central courtyard on the second level has an industrial staircase that can be used to access an unsheltered terrace gallery at the front of the entrance to the second level. To fill up the entire space with natural daylight, the gallery was fitted with circular skylights and the ends of the containers got floor-to-ceiling windows.
